Today is International Nurses Day.

International Nurses Day is designated to honor the contributions of nurses in society on May 12th, the birthday of Florence Nightingale, a British nurse.

Dr. Pamela Cipriano, the president of the International Council of Nurses (ICN), has chosen the theme 'Our Nurses, Our Future, the Economic Power of Care' for International Nurses Day 2024 (IND). This theme was selected to highlight the importance of nurses and raise awareness about the financial constraints and social undervaluation they face, emphasizing that strategic support for nursing can bring socio-economic benefits.

Nurses are essential workers of the healthcare team, providing care, advocacy, and support to patients, families, and communities. They contribute to the health and well-being of populations worldwide with their expertise and dedication, especially at the forefront of public health activities including disease prevention, health promotion, and community service programs.

Furthermore, nurses collaborate with other healthcare professionals, community organizations, and policymakers to address health disparities and strengthen healthcare accessibility, contributing to overall social welfare. Active support is needed to enhance distinctive public health plans tailored to local diverse characteristics and demands, and to timely respond to new health threats and crises.

We recognize that global health threats are increasing due to conflicts, climate crises, and financial instability, and we must urge a shift in perspective and policy based on the lessons learned from the COVID-19 pandemic.
